Balance: How FRA Students Define Success

We asked approximately two dozen Franklin Road Academy students from grades eight through twelve their definitions of success and how they balanced school work and their activities. Not surprisingly, their answers mirrored those reported this summer by the National Association of Independent Schools when it asked high school students the same questions.* FRA students provide a picture of success that is balanced, healthy, and vigorous. They understand the importance of keeping their lives both steady and ready for the next opportunity that may come their way.

FRA students and students in the NAIS study both appreciate being on a college-preparatory instructional path; they also value the importance of family, the intrinsic benefit of being part of a traditional education, and the extrinsic rewards that come from exploring and expanding horizons beyond the classroom. At every major turn in FRA's history, Dr. Fred Frawley has been front and center of the school's journey, spanning the grades and serving in every school division. After a twenty year esteemed military career in the U.S. Army during which he earned several military honors such as the Bronze Star Medal, Dr. Frawley came to FRA in 1988 to begin service to our school which spans 23 years as Counseling Center Coordinator (1988-1994), Middle School Dean (1994-2003), Director of Learning Services and Assistant to Dean of Lower School (2003-2011). Dr. Frawley began at FRA as the Upper School Personal Counselor; eventually, he was asked to design and implement a school-wide personal counseling program for grades K-12, the structure of which is still in place.

Throughout that time, Dr. Frawley also taught classes, coached, and established what has become a long and beloved tradition of teaching hundreds of students the proper care, handling, and protocol of the American flag. Over the years, Dr. Frawley has also mentored and assisted students with appointments to military academies, ROTC programs, and as they pursued their military service and careers.
