Time for the Kites to Fly!

The late columnist Erma Bombeck, through her wit and wisdom, gave us many images of how to raise and release our children. In one piece, she described children as “kites.” You lift them from the ground, gradually let out the string, run until you’re breathless, pluck them out of the spots they get stuck, and then, you watch them soar - free from the string that bound you together, free to soar and become… And so it is with our children. We prepare them for the path (not vice-versa) and then send them off to college and life, competent and confident, knowing who they are and whose they are. They are ready to make their way and their mark on the world and others. In two short weeks, we will graduate 53 seniors, the Class of 2012. They are going to many fine colleges and universities across the nation: Baylor, Belmont, Loyola, University of Southern California, Auburn, Washington University, Notre Dame, Vassar, and Vanderbilt, just to name a few. Many will have college credit already completed, as 96.3% of the advanced placement exams taken yielded opportunities for such course credit. Thus far, the Class of 2012 has earned an FRA record of over $6.5 million in college scholarships, a testimony to their intellect, talents, and commitment to excellence. These seniors have distinguished themselves in many other ways. They are artists, athletes, leaders, and persons with balance lives. They have learned the fulfillment that comes from serving others. This class gave 3515 hours of service during their upper school years, and this spring alone, they have raised over $15,000 for different organizations and causes. Most of all, they led these efforts - they became servant leaders who organized, planned, engaged, and understood the meaning of leading and giving to others. The journey of becoming has not, however, always been an easy road or a straight path. No doubt, there have been disappointments, failures, crossroads, and adjustments, just like the kites. They learned the power that only comes from going through the struggle. And, over the course of years and the love and support of family and faculty, these students have grown into and become the words of our mission. They leave home and FRA as scholars with integrity and balance; they leave as servant leaders and young adults who care. They leave as children of God and young adults ready to forge their paths. The “kites” are ready to soar. Please join me in applauding these awesome seniors, the Class of 2012, as they receive their Bibles at Baccalaureate next week and their diplomas at Graduation the following week. They are young people who are dearly loved by their families and their school; now, they are prepared for the journey that awaits them. Bravo and God’s speed! Dr. Sissy Wade, Head of School
