Today begins one of our favorite spring events in the Upper School, Interim. Interim is held each year the four days prior to Spring Break. The FRA Interim program provides educational experiences outside the traditional classroom setting for our students. Each upper school faculty member sponsors a course, trip, internship, or service project. This program embraces the school’s mission by continuing to instill a lifelong love of learning, develop students of integrity, and lead lives that will make a difference. Many of our upperclassmen choose to make a difference by going on the mission trip to New Orleans or by going into the community locally and serving. We also have a large group enjoying the tour of the Roman Conquest in Europe, including a memorable stop at a “gladiator school.” Others are staying a little closer to home and benefiting from options that include the car class, a fishing expedition, lifeguard certification, or job shadowing a professional in the community. Freshmen have enrolled in mini courses that cover a wide range of interests. We are having everything from International Cooking to tours of Civil War sites in the Nashville area. They can also choose from Movie Madness, Set Construction, or Driver Training. Many thanks to Mrs. Jean Young, for leading Interim week for our Upper School students. Whatever their Interim placement, our students are wonderful ambassadors for FRA. The feedback we receive after Interim year after year compliments their work ethic, their character, and their hearts of service. What an integral part of the FRA experience! FRA Choir in Television Performance This Tuesday on PBS The Franklin Road Academy Vocal Ensemble, under the direction of Mrs. Brenda Jewell, will perform with nationally acclaimed composer Tim Janis in his new "Celebrate America" musical special on WNPTV on March 9th at 7:00 p.m. "Celebrate America," which airs Tuesday, was taped at WNPTV in early October, 2009. Busses rolled from across the state, pulling together 500 students from Tennessee high school music programs. Each choir was brought into the station to record their performance for the broadcast. FRA's choir did an exceptional job, singing "To Where You Are," which was arranged by Tim Janis of the Tim Janis Ensemble. Tim Janis, well known for his "Music with a Mission," has worked on many philanthropic projects with artists such as Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Ray Charles, Andre Previn, and The New York Philharmonic. He has also produced fund-raising program for PBS. "Celebrate America" will be part of a fund-raising event during Public Television's annual pledge drives. WNPTV coordinated this effort, bringing together ten high school choirs from the Nashville and mid-state area. Tim Janis reflected on this experience, "It takes great effort to bring together this opportunity for students. I believe the fabric of our nation is the strength found in our local communities. We need to stay connected and committed with a spirit of serving one another to the best of our abilities." FRA families will both enjoy viewing "Celebrate America" and have an opportunity to purchase a CD from the event which will help qualify our academy for further support in the form of musical supplies. Congratulations to the Vocal Ensemble on this wonderful performance! View a promo of FRA’s Upper School choir and other choirs involved in the PBS Special to air here in Nashville on March 9 at 7:00 p.m. at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcU_0IUShl0

As you may have read recently, many local schools are making up for the snow days by adding minutes to each school day. At FRA, students attend school each day for an amount of time that well exceeds that attended by most schools. This additional accumulated time results in more hours/days than required to meet both state of Tennessee and SAIS guidelines; however, it is the instructional time that is of primary importance in a college-preparatory academy. Therefore, we consider the need for this instructional time and the completion of academic curricular plans in determining whether to make up days that have been missed. As a result of these considerations, we have made modifications to the spring school calendar as follows: 1) Friday, April 16, 2010, will be a full day of school for students in Grades Pre-K through Grade 8 (Lower and Middle School only). Upper School students will not be required to attend this day, as Upper School teachers will be engaged in the TAIS Conference scheduled on our campus. If this day causes unavoidable conflict for Lower and Middle School families, please contact your dean. Additionally, end-of-year perfect attendance awards will NOT be affected by this make-up day. 2) Upper School students will attend a full day of school on Friday, May 21, 2010, and Upper School Exam Review day will now be Monday, May 24, 2010. Upper School Exams will be held from Tuesday, May 25 through Friday, May 28th. 3) There will be NO make-up exam day for Upper School students on Saturday, May 22, 2010. We appreciate your support as we continue to enjoy a great spring semester at Franklin Road Academy!
