Testing: PSAT, SAT I & II, ACT, AP

Colleges and scholarship sponsors evaluate the ability and achievement of prospective students by using five different tests. They are as follows:

  1. PSAT/NMSQT
This practice test helps prepare students for taking the SAT test. FRA students take the PSAT during the fall of 9th, 10th, and 11th grades. The PSAT given in the fall of the junior year is also used as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The selection index total of SAT verbal math and writing scores determine National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Students.
  2. SAT
The Scholastic Aptitude Test is a three-hour, objective question test designed to measure the ability of students to do college work. The test produces a verbal and a mathematic score. Students take the SAT twice during the spring of junior year and once during the fall of senior year.
  3. ACT
Some colleges require that applicants use the American College Testing program. The ACT is divided into four tests which measure general educational development: English usage, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning. The test takes 3.5 hours to complete. FRA students take the ACT twice during the spring of junior year and once during the fall of senior year.
  4. SAT IIs
These one-hour tests measure the student achievement in a particular subject, such as English/writing, foreign language, history, mathematics, or science. Most, but not all, subject areas will have a related SAT II test; some disciplines offer tests in more than one level. One to three SAT II tests can be taken on a test date. Colleges often require both writing and mathematics and many will ask for other specific tests. Check closely to be sure you complete the tests required by the college of your choice.
  5. Advanced Placement Tests
Technically, AP exams are not used in the college admission process. However, colleges are very aware of which students are enrolled in AP classes. Good scores on AP exams can make a difference. These exams are given in May and cover college-level material in a specific course. These exams require extensive academic preparation. Exams are graded on a scale of 0 to 5, and a score of 3 or above may earn credit and advanced standing in college.
