Come a Tide, The Outside Inn, Trucks Roll, Mother to Tigers, My Friend, the Starfinder… In the Lower School Library students enjoyed hearing a variety of books written by George Ella Lyon. A self-professed “word weaver,” she is a nationally recognized author who grew up in Harlan County, Kentucky.
On March 27th she spent the day meeting with our students. She connected very well with the children and left them with lasting impressions concerning her love of words, the sources of stories in their lives, and the importance of journaling those stories.
An important element of Ms. Lyons' message was that writing is a process which requires thought and revision. To illlustrate this point, she has assembled a scroll from all the text pages she created in the process of producing the 4 1/2 pages which was ultimately the text of her book Mother to Tigers. The scroll is long enough to reach all the way around a circle comprised of our third and fourth grade students.
