Add a New Printer

View a Flash movie of this process.

So you want to add a printer to your laptop? Here's what to do:

  1. Click on Start and choose Printers and Faxes:
  2. Click on Add Printer to get the Add Printer Wizard:
  3. Click Next and choose A Network Printer:
  4. Select Find a printer in the directory. Click Next:
  5. The naming scheme gives the school (LS, MS, US) first, then the room number, then the teacher name. Leave the name blank and click Find Now to get a list of all printers, or type in the school you want (LS, MS, US) and click Find Now. Select the printer you want from the list. Click on it and then click Next.
  6. You'll be asked if you want to make this your default printer. You decide. We don't care.
  7. You'll see a summary of what has been added. Just click Finish.

Obviously you can only do this when you are on campus and connected to the network.

What if this doesn't work?

We've had reports of problems when folks try to follow these directions. Typcially the issue is one of the following:

Both of these problems require you to come to the technology office with your laptop. Stop by and we'll get you set up.

Why do it this way?

Our printers are set up in a way that allows us to control all the printing on the network. If a printer is out of commission, we can move all the print jobs to another printer. If you have a lot of junk coming to your printer, we can find and cancel the print job no matter who sent it or which computer it came from. We can also track printer usage so we know where we need to add printers.
