Foreign Languages

Department Chair: Kris Climer

In French and Spanish, students develop abilities listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the target language, gaining greater proficiency in each skill area throughout the course of study. The main objective is communication. Advanced courses (level three and beyond) are taught entirely in the target language. Cultural aspects of Francophone and Hispanic civilization are woven into the curriculum.

The Latin and Classical language courses offer a rigorous study of grammar and vocabulary and reading of the great Classical works. In addition, students learn about the culture of ancient civilizations and the connections to the modern world and modern languages.

Upper-level foreign language courses offer college-level exposure, especially in the six AP courses offered in this department. In addition, a number of hosting and travel opportunities sponsored by the foreign language department foster an authentic contact which is not possible within the confines of the classroom.
