Franklin Road Academy Honors Coach Jerry Williams and Late Coach George Weicker

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 24, 2016) — On Friday, FRA honored baseball coaches Jerry Williams and George Weicker in a ceremony full of laughter, tears, and great memories shared. Williams, who is coaching in his final season for the Panthers, and Weicker’s wife Lucy and daughter Libby were on hand to see the coaches’ numbers being retired and to receive commemorative custom bats as a token of thanks for their services to the Panther baseball team.

Ed Zaborowski, a fellow coach and great friend to both men, was the keynote speaker for the event, saying, “I truly feel privileged to have taught and coached with George Weicker for 35 years. I actually spent more time with him in my lifetime than I have with my own siblings. And, it has been 41 years since Jerry and I entered Vanderbilt together as freshmen. What we do here today is fitting, historic, and even epic, but those who are lucky enough to have worked with Jerry and George, to have been coached by either or both, or simply to have had each of them in their lives know there is no metric for what they have meant to Franklin Road Academy. They will be missed, but always, they will be loved.”

Head of School Sean Casey and Athletic Director Kris Palmerton unveiled bronze plaques to solidify the number 24 for Weicker and number 20 for Williams into FRA’s history books. “As of April 21, 2017, after this season, no Franklin Road Academy baseball player or baseball coach will ever wear the numbers 20 or 24 in the history of Franklin Road Academy baseball. These numbers will be permanently retired to acknowledge and honor their work for generations to come,” said Casey. “Our hope is these numbers will be a reminder to future generations of FRA baseball players and coaches of the shoulders we stand on so that we can see further.”

The retired numbers will be affixed to FRA’s Crockett Stadium on The Hill.
