Franklin Road Academy Names Tennessee Wrestling Icon as Head Coach
TN Chapter of the National Hall of Fame member Doug Newman named FRA coach

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 24, 2017) — FRA’s athletic department is pleased to announce the hiring of Doug Newman as head wrestling coach.

Newman, whose career spans an incredible 46 years, was most recently a community coach at Pearl Cohn High School. He has also coached at Goodlettsville High School, Hunters Lane High School, Hillwood High School, and Stratford High School. During his illustrious career, he has trained 24 state medalists and one state champion.

“I have always had a lot of respect for FRA, its wrestlers, and the wrestling program,” said Newman. “The parents have always welcomed me and my wrestlers when we traveled there over the years, and I consider its wrestling program to be a complete class act. I am honored to serve as head coach, and I’m excited to dive right in and get to know the FRA students, parents, and faculty.”

Newman, who was inducted into the Tennessee Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2009, was the first director of the TSSAA state duals in 1987 and served as director of the tournament from 1987-1990. He has also served as the state director for AAU Wrestling in Tennessee.

“I could not be more thrilled to welcome Coach Newman to the FRA family. He has a strong spiritual foundation and truly embodies the mission of Franklin Road Academy, as well as being a transformational coach. I am extremely excited for our student athletes, parents, and community to have Coach Newman as a part of the FRA family,” said FRA Athletic Director Kris Palmerton.

Newman will be assisted by David Dawson, FRA’s Heart to Heart coordinator and varsity football coach, at the varsity level and Garrett Whitworth, an FRA faculty fellow, at the middle school level.
