Imagine having a library consisting of only a couple of bookshelves? It can be hard to picture all the difficulties that would come with this when students here have access to the gorgeous FRA library housing thousands of books and wonderful public libraries within driving distance. If these resources were unavailable, think of how much student potential would be hindered. While it can be hard to imagine, this is precisely the predicament Gahima Agape Secondary School finds themselves in.
Current FRA teacher Mrs. Jaynes first became acquainted with the school last summer. “I spent a month in Rwanda last summer,” says Mrs. Jaynes “and it was there that I was introduced to Gahima Agape Secondary School and to the teachers and students. I found much to my horror the library to be small so, when I came back, I not only attempted to write grants for one hundred dollar laptops but had the idea to help build up their library.” Looking in her closet, Mrs. Jaynes found loads of English books that the department no longer uses and came up with the great idea to ship them to Gahima Agape Secondary School. After sharing her idea with her Literature of Africa class, the whole plan really began to take off. “We are so excited about this project; we can’t wait to get it started,” says senior Morgan Alexander.
The Literature of Africa class has since teamed up with the National Honor Society and plans are in the works for fundraisers and drives to send Gahima Agape Secondary School the supplies necessary to give the students the education they are capable of achieving.
