Finding Truth in Ugnada

If there is one constant in high school, it’s the rumor mill. Everyone talks about who’s dating who, who got injured playing sports, or some other piece of news. The same thing can be said for adults. Whenever a major event happens, they all have differing opinions and advice, and right now, the swine flu is definitely classified as adult gossip. There is an abundance of swine flu stories in the news and papers, but how do we decipher fact from fiction? Jean Bottiggi, the Lower School nurse, says that most people are overreacting. “People think that, when you get the swine flu, it lasts for a long time-not true. The flu lasts two to three days.” This is what we know: the swine flu is, in most ways, just like the regular flu. This particular strain originated in pigs, and then spread to people. You cannot, however, get the flu from eating pork. Even with information that should appease our worries, many people are still fearful. Luckily for FRA students, Mrs. Bottiggi has given us some helpful tips for combating the flu.

    • Avoid sharing food.
    • Wash your hands.
    • Keep your “personal space”. That means no hugging or close contact all the time.
    • If you do get sick, stay home.
    • Rest!
    • Only when you are fever-free for 24 hours, should you come back to school.
