THRIVE is a postsecondary education program for students with intellectual disabilities ages 18-21. It is designed to empower young adults to further develop their independence and prepare for entering the workforce or attending a college program. The program is developed and led by an occupational therapist, ensuring a holistic approach that addresses each student’s unique needs.
Students may enroll in the program for 1-2 years, depending on their individual needs and goals. The THRIVE curriculum focuses on career development, college readiness, and fostering independence in adulthood. Through our community partnerships with Friends Life and internship opportunities at local businesses, students will spend a great deal of their time engaged in the community, building valuable skills, preparing to attend college programs, and entering the workforce.
Applications requested on or before January 6.
About the Curriculum
Financial Literacy: This course equips students with essential money management skills for independence. Students learn to establish personal budgets, open and/or manage bank accounts, use debit cards and digital wallets, and read bank statements. Students also develop practical skills such as handling cash, counting change, and appropriately tipping at restaurants.
Career Development: This course prepares students for the workforce by focusing on career exploration, resume building, interview skills, and mock interviews. Students develop self-advocacy skills and learn appropriate workplace behavior, applying these skills by seeking jobs within their community. For students planning to pursue higher education, families are supported throughout the college application process.
Independence into Adulthood: This course equips students with practical life skills, including grocery shopping, meal preparation, self-care, laundry, and time management using online calendars and reminders. Students also learn to maintain a healthy lifestyle through balanced nutrition and physical activity.
Computer Literacy: This course equips students with essential technological skills for college or the workforce. Students learn to send and respond to emails, use Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, perform basic data entry, and manage tasks like printing, saving, and organizing documents. The course also introduces AI tools and assistive technology supports to enhance productivity and accessibility.
PAES Work Lab: THRIVE students spend time each week in FRA’s PAES Work Lab, where they explore and develop job skills in a simulated work environment. Students rotate through tasks in areas like business, consumer services, construction, processing, and technology, helping them discover interests, assess abilities, and build essential workplace skills for future employment.
Community Based Work & Partnerships: Through partnerships with Friends Life and local businesses, students spend significant time off-campus. At Friends Life, students can join elective groups of their choosing and connect with new peers. They also gain valuable work experience through internships at sites such as D1 West Nashville and Barney's Sweet Shop, helping them develop essential skills in real-world settings
