Davidson College recently named its home dugout in honor of the late George Weicker, who was a beloved teacher and coach at FRA for more than 30 years.
Weicker played first base and outfield for the Wildcats from 1972-1975, during which he was a three-time all-conference selection. He was named Southern Conference Player of the Year an All-American first team pick by the American Baseball Coaches Association in 1975, and he was also named to the Southern Conference 75th anniversary team. Davidson's Rookie of the Year team award has been presented in his honor since 1988.
Franklin Road Academy’s highly-touted seniors Tymon Mitchell and Lance Wilhoite have officially signed their letters of intent to play football in college. Mitchell has committed to the University of Georgia, and Wilhoite will play at the University of Oregon.
Franklin Road Academy’s backfield tandem of Eric Stoxstill-Diggs and Watson Tansil will move to the Ivy League this fall. Stoxstill-Diggs has committed to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and Tansil will play at Columbia University in Manhattan, New York.
The Panthers have advanced in the TSSAA DII-A playoffs, defeating St. George's Independent School (Memphis) 17-6 on Friday.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Panthers were the first on the board early in the second when Stoxstill-Diggs connected with junior Lance Wilhoite on a 41-yard touchdown pass. Freshman kicker Jack Norris added to the Panther lead with a 30-yard field goal in the third quarter. Stoxstill-Diggs found Wilhoite for a 12-yard Panther touchdown in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Gryphons.
