FRA has three school nurses, five counselors, and a wellness department chair serving students in the lower school, middle school, and upper school.

The Six Dimensions of Wellness

While the concept of wellness often revolves around physical and mental well-being, wellness experts understand that there’s much more to it than that. Wellness includes so much more than the foods you eat or the time you spend at the gym—according to the National Institute of Wellness: “Wellness is an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.” The National Wellness Institute promotes the Six Dimensions of Wellness: emotional, occupational, physical, social, intellectual, and spiritual. Addressing all six dimensions of wellness in our lives builds a holistic sense of wellness and fulfillment.

Cracked...but Not Broken

This spring, the counseling department had the opportunity to attend a wellness conference sponsored by the Southern Association of Independent Schools. Dr. Dave Verhaagen, psychologist and author, delivered the keynote address. His talk was both enlightening and inspiring as he focused on the concepts of Kintsugi and Post-Traumatic Growth. Intrigued by these topics, I eagerly dove into the research to learn more. In this article, I share what I have learned in hopes that you too find hope and direction through these concepts.

Lessons of Winter

There is something about winter I really love. Maybe it is the hot chocolate on cold evenings, sweatpants and warm socks, the crackle of the fireplace, or the pop of red in the trees as cardinals perch on a rare snowy morning. The reduction in daylight and the increase of darkness are a nudge to turn our attention inwards and to pay greater attention to our inner lives. Like trees, we humans require time out from our busy lives to ask ourselves important questions as we head towards the beginning of a new year. When the leaves are stripped from the branches, nothing is hidden. It’s all laid out for us to see. Winter shows us what is broken. It shows us what is strong and sturdy. And it shows us what is new and emerging. The winter months require astute observations and application of the things that nourish and replenish us. We are in winter now, and there is much to learn.
