Learning Environment
Sustained periods of virtual education are successful when students have a routine to follow and a space in which to work and learn. Learning in the cloud can be just as challenging and rigorous as a day of learning in the classroom. A dedicated learning space for virtual learning should ideally be located in a shared area such as at the kitchen table, a large kitchen counter, or a desk in a living room or family room. When the learning space is separate from bedrooms and distanced from a television and other distractions, it sets the expectation and tone that the space is for work. Additionally, an online learning space in a shared area allows parents and guardians to readily support learning.

Be sure to have access to:

  • FRA assigned tablet pc
  • Good lighting
  • Reliable internet service
  • Learning materials and tools

Communication
Aside from actual time spent working online, one significant indicator of student success is the frequency and duration of a student’s interaction with teachers, parents, and other students, regarding school and schoolwork. To truly learn, students must talk about, explain, and ask questions about their lessons, and they must know exactly who to speak with and how to contact them for clarification or help. Students who are afraid to ask for help often fall behind and are generally less successful than students who actively seek out help. Our faculty is committed to the success of the remote learning plan for each of our students, and teachers will provide ongoing support throughout this process.

Advice for Parents
Online learning requires that parents and caregivers consider many factors. Specifically, parents and guardians have the responsibility to support their student's meaningful engagement in learning through virtual means. Asking for help is not always a natural habit, and parents should work closely with their student to help build the confidence to seek out help whenever necessary. Additionally, parents are welcome to email their student’s teacher, if they have any questions, need assistance, or need advice on how to help their student succeed. As always, please notify the school if your student is sick and can’t attend their online classes.

Counselors and ASPIRE
Counselors, ASPIRE staff, and college counselors will be available during designated office hours to virtually meet with students. They will continue providing services to their caseloads, primarily in a one-on-one format, throughout the course of each school day. They will be available to help support students who are absent or cannot participate and may choose to lead small groups online for study sessions, tutorials, or personal support.
